Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about vehicle compliance in Nigeria

How do I check if my vehicle is insured in Nigeria?+

Enter your plate number on DriveMate and we query the NIID (National Insurance Industry Database) in real time. You'll see your insurance policy status and expiry date instantly. You can also check directly on askniid.org or by dialling the NIID USSD code *565*11#.

What is NIID?+

NIID stands for the National Insurance Industry Database. Maintained by the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), it contains records of all motor vehicle insurance policies issued in Nigeria. It is the authoritative source for verifying whether a vehicle holds valid insurance.

What documents does a Nigerian vehicle owner need?+

Nigerian vehicle owners are legally required to hold: (1) valid motor insurance — minimum third-party as mandated by NAICOM; (2) a road worthiness certificate issued by the state vehicle inspection office; and (3) a vehicle licence issued by the FRSC. Commercial vehicles may also require a hackney permit.

How do I renew my vehicle licence in Nigeria?+

You can renew your vehicle licence online through DriveMate without visiting a FRSC office. We handle the process and can deliver physical documents within Lagos. Alternatively, renew in person at a FRSC licensing office or through the AutoReg portal at verify.autoreg.ng.

How do I check my road worthiness certificate?+

For Lagos State vehicles, road worthiness can be verified through the DVIS (Digital Vehicle Inspection System) at dvis.lg.gov.ng, or instantly via DriveMate using your plate number. DriveMate shows whether your certificate is valid, expired, or not on record.

Is DriveMate free to use?+

Yes — compliance checks are free with no account required (up to 3 checks per 30 days). Create a free account for unlimited checks, reminders, and document storage. Document renewal fees apply and vary by document type and vehicle engine size.
